History

The Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna was established on 1st April 1997 by an order made under Section 22 of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 with two faculties namely the Faculties of Business Studies and Applied Science. The first batches of students were admitted to both the faculties in October 1998. Now both the faculties offer five special degree programmes of four year duration with an optional exit point in the third year.

The history of Vavuniya Campus as a seat of learning goes back to 1991, as it was formed by elevating the status of the Northern Province Affiliated University College (NPAUC).

The permanent site of the Vavuniya Campus is about nine kilometers away from Vavuniya in the Vavuniya- Mannar road at Sopalapuliyankulam, Pampaimadu. One hundred and sixty (160) acres of land was acquired and reserved for the construction of academic, administrative and residential buildings. The construction of two residential hostels, to accommodate about two hundred students in the first phase, is nearing completion. The consultancy services for academic buildings, structures, and services have been awarded.

Though the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna celebrates its tenth anniversary in the year 2007 it has witnessed hardly any infrastructure development and continued to function in the same building premises due to the turbulent civil war situation in the northern region.

Except the civil war situation, the Vavuniya Campus has social harmony and cultural diversity among its community, by having students from all parts of the Island.
